Key Value Templates is a new feature in our email advertisement software. These are the templates you can create to help optimize your targeting when you have multiple factors to include or navigate complex conditioning groups. Later on, when you create line items and set up their delivery, you can leverage the templates to save time.
Key Value Templates section is located under the Demand menu on your left hand side.
Create the first template by clicking the purple button Create new template on the top right corner, or in the middle of the empty dashboard.
To create a Key Value Template, first you should name the template. Make sure the name is intuitive and easy to understand by all members of your team. You can make a template for one value type only (area phone code, zipcode, age), or to combine a set of values or conditioning groups for a segment of your target audience that you frequently target (young female adults with pet dogs).
Let’s start with creating a simple template. We named it Central London Postcodes. This template will filter all the audience individuals whose zipcode belongs to central London. For example, you can use it to promote an advertiser who owns a local shop (coffee shop, pet shop, barbers, etc) and wants to promote in this area only.
By naming it Central London Postcodes, anyone who creates the line items in the future will find it easy to understand what it is, and save a lot of time on typing in the codes manually every time.
The character limit for the Name of the template is 255, giving you plenty of space to be descriptive and precise.
The next step is defining the keys. In our case, a key would be zipcode that can take any value belonging to the eastern or western center of London.
Next, you need to choose an operator from a dropdown menu. You can select one of the following options:
- = is
- != is not
- < is less than
- > is greater than
- <= is less than or equal to
- >= is greater than or equal to.
In our case, we will use multiple keys named zipcode and an operator “= equal to”, while listing all central London zipcodes as values.
Finally, enter the value – EC1A.
To complete this key value template, we should list all zip codes possible. We will do that by clicking on the Add new key value button, and choose the operator OR. You can also choose the operator AND, indicating that all values from this conditioning group must be satisfied in order for the ad to be delivered.
You can add as many values as you need and always change the operators from a dropdown menu on the right-hand side of each value.
The other option to make the template more sophisticated for even more precise targeting is to combine multiple values or condition groups.
Let’s say we want to target dog owners in the city of Berlin. We would need to use two values – one is the city of Berlin, and the other is the pet which will be set to dog. Once we set the city value, click the +Add new value button and choose one of the operators – AND or OR. In our case, we need the operator AND.
The final key value template is set to target only those audience members who both live in Berlin and have a pet dog.
Now, let’s say that the same advertiser – Germany pet shop – has two shops, one in Berlin and one in Munich. They wish to target both. We can make a single Key Value Template buy leveraging conditioning groups.
Go to the button +Add new condition group and choose one of the operators – AND or OR. In our case, we will go for OR.
The final template will ensure that the ad will be delivered only to dog owners in Berlin or Munich.
However, there is one more way to make this same key value template – by selecting the dog as a value that must be checked, and the city as a key that varies between cities. In that case, we also have two conditioning groups, but we use the operator AND between them.
Once you have completed setting up your key value template, click the purple Create button on the bottom right corner.
If you have changed your mind and you don’t need this template after all, click the Cancel button. Don’t worry, you can also delete the templates later on if you don’t need them (anymore).
You can manage all the existing key-value templates from the Key Value Template dashboard. On the top of the menu, you will see the number next to the words All, indicating how many templates you have created thus far.
On the top right corner is the button for creating new templates when you need them.
If you have a large number of templates and you need to find one to edit, copy or delete, leverage the Search bar on the right to find it by name.
Under Actions next to each template on your list you will find three options – Edit, Copy, and Delete. You can edit any template at any point (for example, adding another German city to the list for pet shop advertisers).
Copying the templates is another useful functionality that enables you to create a new complex template in seconds (for example, for targeting cat owners across Germany).
And, finally, if you no longer work with a specific advertiser or you have stopped catering to a segment of your audience, you can click on the three dots and permanently delete a template. Beware, there is no way back after deleting a template.
